I broke the hook of my rj45 plus ( the end off a cable lead) and went to get a new one to replace it.I could only buy packs of 10 (!!??) and the necessary crimping tool was 14.99. I had to buy a whole new lead (which isa bit too short ) for 6.99 instead. I have looked on the net and cant find anywhere that sells rj45 plugs singly-nor ones which do not need a special tool.
Do these things exist or is it a closed shop (pricewise) to people who just want to make their own simple repairs.

The best thing to do is probably take your lead in to a small computer repair shop and ask them if they could put one on for you, as a special tool is needed to crimp the wires in place.

You can buy single RJ45 plugs (22p at TLC):

or 99p for a pack of 10 at Maplin:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=32111&TabID=1&source=2&doy=23m1

(NB not including p&p - they may have branches local to you)

but you will always come a-cropper with the crimp tool; cheapest I found on eBay was 7.

I've made lots of leads without a crimper. You just need to carefully tap the contacts home with a flat piece of metal and a light hammer. Same with the plastic bit that hold the cable.

Cheers for that.Never even thought about small repair person -will go and search for one.

You can buy them from B&Q warehouse.  I use them all day long and make my own cables to any lenght I need and have no problem with them.
