For reasons too complicated to bore you with, someone I know has been accused by a contact of putting insulting messages to them on Facebook, Twitter etc and has been threatened (by telephone) that this person will take these messages to the police. No matter what the details are, my view is that the police would tell this person that there's nothing to be done and to get off the social networks if it's a problem. I think it's an empty threat, just to show that this person has got hold of a personal telephone number, but has anyone been through anything similar?

The one lesson you can learn from this is to never give too much personal info away on line.
They could very well take these messages to the police, depending on the level of defamatory insults they may well act but they usually have bigger fish to fry so to speak.
