Windows Explorer problem

On opening my Download folder (to access my films etc) in My Docs using Windows XP a prompt has started to appear stating that Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and need to close. On clicking the action box my desktop closes the opened page, all the homepage icons briefly disappear and then return. All other apps work with no errors. What could be the problem and more importantly how do I fix it? Thank you.
