With Hotmail its usually because the recipient has gone over the allowed capacity.  With ntlworld its usually because the server has gone down or there is a problem with the recipient's e-mail.

MSN is actually in the process of upgrading all hotmail accounts to 250MB free storage (at the moment the limit is 2MB unless you pay), so this situation shouldn't last too much longer.

However, with Hotmail you also have the option of changing your junk mail filter options and if you set this to exclusive your account will only receive mail from addresses in your safe list. You should check with your friends to make sure you are on their safe lists.
