When you go to the Open Office site to download the program, are you telling it to RUN the program or SAVE the file on to your computer??
The file you download should be OOo.3.2.0_ etc_etc_wJRE.exe
I would be inclined to SAVE the EXE file to your computer and then try to install it later.
It's possible that a fragment of your original Open Office program is still in the Registry and is stopping the program from being installed again.
Just a thought!!

hello wak, it looks like i´ve found the root of the problem, power!!!!!!!!!
as you know there are 3 methods of internet connection, cable, wi-fi, and the portable "stick" . well i have the stick which i beleive has 3gb.
to cut long story short, i went to my very helpful pc shop, and asked them to help, he was overloaded with work, so i thought id look at my emails, then i thought why not try for the uphteen time to download OO, would you beleive it, no problem, but i couldnt do it all, as the shop was closing, so i´ll be there tomorrow at 10.
ps my stick couldnt compete with wi-fi connection in pc shop

now i´m back to square 1!!!!, i naively thought i could download OO, today, i had my battery fully charged with 4 hours power. but for unknown reason i didnt get OO today. the signs were ominous when i started to download, it said 25mins time to completion, yesterday and another time it said about 2hrs. so i downloaded OO, but what i got was??well put it this way, the ikon on my screen shows a brown folder, and underneath it says..Open Office org 3.2 (install), when i clicked on the ikon, i got a application window, with several files, but nothing for me to click onto to start composing a letter????
help please

I downloaded and saved Open Office a long time ago and it was version 2.2.1.
This was an .EXE file which you double click on to get it to install.
When installing, it probably has to contact the OO website either for update or other information so you will need to be on line when installing it.
Hope this helps.
P.S. the OO EXE file I downloaded was about 112 MB. which could be a bit bigger these days.

hi again wak, i just tried to google the details you gave me eg.. OOo 3.2_etc_etc wjre.exe. and i´ve found several companies with unknown names willing for me to download, but they want me to sign up first, doesnt this normally include a fee?
idea; if you haven't searched your PC :

a. Type in OO.exe (or program name) to Start/Search/files & folders
b.Look in Control panel/AddDelete to see if its on your pc.
c.Look in C drive/Shared files/programs & dowloads - is it there?

bloody hell, i didnt realise there were so many fragments of OO in my pc. well ive just had a good clean out, gone through everything, deleted anything with the words open office on it. Now does mean i can downlload OO now without any problems?? do i follow waks advice and go for OO exe?

piggy
Hi, I did mention in my first posting (above) that there could be a fragment of the old installation which was causing problems.
I would download the required file from www.openoffice.org/product/ which should be on the page supplied by Google and it should be a FREE program.
The file to download will be a long name similar to the one also shown in my first posting.

hello wak, i took yr advice i beleive i removed every trace of the original OOfrom my pc. but now i´m just wondering if its still in the system, because i just tried again to download it from a link sent to me from another ab, it stopped after 10mins, then i tried to use the mirror, and again it stopped downloading after 15mins(screen goes dark, when i press enter, its stopped!!)
HI, Piggynose, If the screen goes dark it could be your screen saver cutting in.
Pressing enter could interrupt the loading. The next time your screen goes dark just click the left mouse button. If you keep the mouse cursor moving every 5 or 10 minutes the screen saver shouldn't cut in.
Where are you saving the file to?? Somewhere on the hard drive?? or the desk top??

hi wak, when i normally download stuff, it usually goes to my screen in the shape of an ikon. yes i´m no expert, so i assume this means it goes to my harddrive?
will try again using the left hand mouse
fingers crossed
Question Author
at long last, i´ve downloaded OO!! thanx to wak stating that i was pressing the wrong frigging key when the screen went dark, by pressing the left hand mouse, i was able to let the program run and run til completion.
thanx once again wak and the others who advised me
