Does the movie/tv world influence future tech?

Is it a case of chicken and egg? If a movie features a particular item or gadget that doesnt exist do tech firms maybe even subconsciously steer tech towards that idea where they wouldnt normally have done so?

Cant think of an obvious example but would 'xxx' exist if 'xxx' didnt include it in the film?

Yes I cant remember off the top of my head whether it was the Gadgetshow, mythbusters or something else that went through a list of gadgets/inventions that's being was dreamed up in a movie before making it eventually into the retail market.
