My brother has just been in touch to say that his computer has seized up due the above problem.

It kicks in automatically once he has started Windows.

I have Googled the problem but all the solutions seem to be that he should download software from websites - but he can't get past the initial screen without clicking on something on the Security Tool screen.

Can anybody help me?

Try booting in "safe mode with networking", you may then be able to download a virus scan removal tool such as Eset free online scan. If you don't know how to get into safe mode, just switch of the computer, and as soon as you switch on, keep pressing F8, you should hear a beep and will will give you the options.

Thanks - have passed on the instructions and am waiting to hear if this action worked.
that's a bugger to get rid of and bizarrely seems to hit laptops/netbooks more than pcs...?

As stated, you will need to restart in safe mode. Note that this nasty disables system restore so you can't get rid of it that way. I was able to clean it using Malwarebytes AntiMalware but this must be installed in safe mode.

I think that he has the computer up and was trying to install new anti-viral software when I spoke to him last night.

Remember the days when we thought electric typewriters were new and exciting? I would be lost without my PC, my macbook, my ipod, my mobile phone and all the rest.
