USB Port not working on Vista. Anyone help?

A couple of days ago I inserted a regular Kingston flash drive containing files I needed, in the front USB port on my PC which I have always used (for convenience) and for some reason I got the message "You need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it. Do you wish to format it?"
What is that all about? I thought I'd got a knackered up flash drive so went out and bought 2 more at cost of £15! Inserted in same port - same bloody message! These are BRAND NEW unused flash drives! So why am I getting this message all of a sudden? I've gone into Computer>Manage> etc and it showed the F drive as RAW. I rebooted (as you do!) and now the drive has disappeared altogether from Computer>Manage> etc.
Is this yet another Vista problem? I have another PC (same model - OS Vista) and the flash drives run fine on that one?
