"what kind of lead do i use to transfer the tapes from my old vcr to the dvd recorder?"
Presumably each machine has a SCART socket, in which case you just need a SCART lead.

"is it possible to record my tapes on to a video camcorder, then transfer them to the dvd?" I would think that would pretty much guarantee a cr@ppy result.
