I'd like some advice on how to reinstall Windows XP.

I have had trouble with logging into MSN Messenger, hotmail and various secure sites.  After trying all the "troubleshooting" ideas with no luck ie checking for viruses/security/settings, I would like to start from scratch.

Do the recovery disks set up Internet Explorer as well?

Is there a website with step by step tips or can anyone give me any pointers?  Any advice is appreciated.

The first thing is to backup all your data as you will loose it all. You need the windows xp cd and also the cds for all the applications you use (eg office). If you are happy that you can wipe all your data, boot from the xp cd and do a fresh install rather than a repair or a parallel install (ie retaining the original xp install). I would re format the drive: delete the existing partitions then recreate them, format them (as NTFS) then do the install. xp has most drivers but you may need to get the correct drivers for the modem. The device manager will tell you what drivers it can't find. I would then service pack it and then install all your applications. xp comes with IE 6.0
Buttons advice is sound as usual. If you require a step-by-step guide go to this page:-http://www.blackviper.com/Articles/OS/InstallXPPro/insta llxppro1.htm

I've recently reinstalled windows xp. As I have a lot of files on my pc (and my cd burner wasn't working prior to the reinstall), formatting my hard drive was not an option. One thing I did lose is my Outlook Express containing over 2000 e-mails, some with important info like passwords, etc. I also lost my address book. Also some files that were on my desktop dissappeared, though I did find most things.

If you choose to reinstall windows xp, put anything important on your c drive, and not in c/windows. Save your e-mails into a folder (they are .eml files) or forward them to a web based e-mail account such as g-mail or yahoo. If you can burn stuff onto cd then do so. When you have reinstalled windows xp you will need to go to the microsoft website and get all the updates too.
