hotmail email query?

I created a hotmail email address some months back and all has been fine.
Today I go to check my email as it shows I have 1 received email on my windows live msn screen where it shows who's online and who's not.
But when I click on the little mail icon in that window, it takes me to windows mail.live, but says 'you dont have an inbox.. yet ' ......??
Any help please?
I'm not too familiar with it all to be honest.
