I have a PC which runs on Windows XP. It is currently feeling very poorly and I am not really sure what to do.

It has, in the last 24 hours, seized up about 4 times. It just grinds to a halt. I have to switch it off and on again and then it works for a while.

I use AVG free virus protection and this is up-to-date and the computer is scanned daily for viruses.

What is likely to be causing this to happen?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi
If you don't know how to use registry cleaners, and do a full AV scan with system restore turned off, clean out all temp files, and use hijackthis, you will need help. There is not the one piece of software that will help much in this situation. Get some help, backup documents and get Windows reloaded. If you have a restore disk or Windows and it's product key .. all the better.
Sounds like you are either 1. Infected with adware 2. Bogged down with resources being used up due to various running processes 3. Hardware issue ... or a combination of all.

Thanks for your post. The PC is working okay at present, but I am nervous about doing anything on the computer that I may lose in the event of a freeze.

Have now used a registry cleaner (free from PC world) which found about 370 invalid files and have cleaned out all my temp files.

Would it be okay to have AVG and Hijackthis installed and running at the same time?

I did try to defragment the PC but it keeps telling me that there is a scheduled "chkdsk" scan due and it won't allow me to defragment. Is this relevant to my problem?
