Do you actually have a Static IP? Normally you will only have one of these if you've requested it.

Go into your Netgear router settings page and, under basic settings, choose to acquire your IP address dynamically from your ISP. Also choose to get your DNS server settings automatically from the ISP. Ensure that UPnP, under advanced settings, is enabled on your wireless router.

Finally, under WAN setup, choose Open NAT filtering, and see if this resolves the issue. Open NAT filtering is not ideal, but it can often allow Xbox Live, which can be awkwardly tetchy to work correctly.
I assumed they meant they had assigned a static IP on the xbox!

This sounds to me like a problem with the wireless security code.

Emma, when you connect are you asked to put in the security code? if so are you sure you are using the correct one

(also just out of interest, how far away is the xbox from the router?)

my wireless router is in my frontroom and my sons bedroom is just off the front room the 2 are not far apart at all..... ive put in the secrity code and ive double checked too make sure that its been put in rite, the error message i get is that u can not connect too the internet with a static ip addy???? i dont really wanna open up my router for everybody too connect too so maybe i wld be best just too connect via an ethernet cable??? but dont wanna do that as the wireless cost a few quid and i wld rather use this.....if i can get passed the ip problem it will be all good lol
The xbox should be set to obtain it's IP automatically (DHCP)

if you are 100% sure you are getting the wireless key correct then it's possible that either DHCP isn't turned on on your router so it won't give out an IP address to the xbox, or that mac address filtering is turned on on the router so only known devices can connect.

think the best thing is to checkk a couple of setting on the router.

Open a web browser on a computer that is connected to the router and type the following in the address bar (or just click the link below)

http://192.168.1.1

you should get a prompt for a username and password, enter "virginmedia" for both

then when the routers admin pages have loaded click on the LAN IP settings link on the left and make sure the "use router as DHCP server has a tick in it.

then click on the wireless settings under advanced and select the setup access list button (this part is from memory) and in there set it so all devices are allowed to connect (doing this is not a security risk at all)

Then try and connect the xbox again (making sure it is set to obtain IP automatically)
oh also while in the router admin pages click the uPnP link under advanced and make sure there is a tick in "turn uPnP on"
