My pc has Mozilla-firefox with wordpad (XP). Can I upgrade it free to Word? If I go into Microsoft it says that I must have Microsoft Internet Explorer (but I haven't got further than that), can I change to that? I have seen free upgrades using the wordpad engine to 'Jarte', any comments on that.

No sorry. Wordpad is a freebie on your PC and is not an upgrade path to Word.
Have you tried looking at Open Office which can read word documents?
WordPad is a simple text editor not a word processor, and totally unrelated to Word (other than it's by Microsoft).
Open Office has a Word-type application called Writer. It is good and as mentioned above...free!
Don't know about Jarte, but if you just want a word processor, rather than a full office suite, try Abiword which is free

Thank you for your advice, I will look into both Abiword and Open Office.
