No matter what I put in Google the search result I then select directs me to various rubbish sites with my search term listed multiple times but selling things and nothing to do with it.
The Back button never works you can only close down Internet Explorer 8.
Is this a known malware attack and the best solution please.

Some malware does do that kind of thing.

Google is working fine for me.

Maybe you have some malware on your computer?
Some malware does do that kind of thing.

If you don't already have them, download and install the free versions of Malwarebytes from http://tinyurl.com/d5jtuz and Superantispyware from http://www.superantispyware.com/ (there is a link on the page to download the free version). Reboot your computer in safe mode with networking, then run each program in turn, making sure you get the latest updates before doing a scan. Delete anything the programs find, reboot and hopefully the problem will have been fixed.
You almost certainly have malware / spyware on your computer.

Make sure you have up to date anti virus and malware protection software on your computer and run them on a regular basis.

As has been said, malwarebytes is good.

I spoke too soon. Problem has returned and now when I try to run the malwarebytes program it removes the program exe file from the computer.

The Malwarebytes Forum know of this as:-
CLB Rootkit infection aka WinNT-Alureon
Some of the symptoms of the infection that may be seen to be occuring.
1)MBAM will not install or run if already installed.
2)Other security tools also will not install or run if already installed.
3)Some installed security softwares that are still able to run no longer are able to update.
4)Some well known security/vendor sites are inaccesible as they are being blocked.
5)MBAM or other tools keep detecting file(s) or registry keys but failing to permamently remove.
6)Hijacked search results

I will do a Acronis True Image Restore back a few weeks.
See what is starting up by using msconfig. Search on the web for each ticked item. Untick if suspicous.
We had a similar problem as this about a year ago on my daughters computer. We had many of the same symptoms as you.

Every time I thought I had uninstalled the software it came back again and reinstalled itself.

I know a LOT about computers but this spyware had got itself so entwined with everything I finished up having to do a complete reinstall of Windows.
Avira do a free product - Avira AntiVir Rescue System - which is Linux based. You download the .iso file, burn it to CD/DVD then boot your computer from it and let it run. I found it was the only thing which worked when my lass managed to infect the computers here with a really nasty virus which locked us out from task manager, editing the registry and even prevented booting in safe mode as well as infecting just about every executable on all the drives. After that I disabled autorun entirely for all users except me and the administrator.
