Are there any laptops out there that are suitable for hardcore gaming? Is it possible to upgrade laptop graphics cards? Cheers

no.

Yes, they are producing gamer orientated laptops see http://news.com.com/Notebooks+make+a+play+as+gamer+machines/2100-1044_3-5157648.html?tag=nl but they ain't cheap. As for upgrading your video chip: they are hard-wired onto the laptop mainboard so unless you are exceptionally good with a soldering iron on a 4 ply circuit board, I would say no, it is not possible to upgrade.

As it happens there are a few laptops that allow you to upgrade the graphics on them, the manufacturer that come to mind initially is alienware. I believe they use a proprietry format though and are marketed as gamers laptops with an accorfingly expensive price.

My current laptop has a mobility radeon 9700 graphics chipset and this manages to run pretty much all the recent games such as half life 2 and doom 3. There is also some newer chipsets out this month from both ATI and Nvidia that will give much better performance and they will be using a new graphics module which will be interchangable as it is based on the new PCI express sockets for laptops.
