A convicted murderer still in prison as got a facebook account. It is under a false first name but surname is his. His photo is on the profile. The friends section shows the same people who were on his facebook, before and during his trial. Its definately him.
I along with others have reported this to facebook over 8 weeks ago, and nothing as been done to remove this account. I have also reported this to the police via crimestoppers by email. I have not had any reply from either. Any suggestions to what you think I should do next? Don't want to speak to the press for obvious reasons.

Is it illegal then to leave your facebook account if you get sent to prison?
If he's updating it from prison then of course the authorities would (should) be embarrassed.

I do not trust the press, but think that maybe what I will have to do. Do you think If I spoke to the police myself, face to face , would be better. Maybe if its the victims family making the complaint , something would be done. sorry I take long to reply, I use keyboard with 2 fingers
why can't you speak to the press?

and also why can't he have an fb account, is it illegal or something - can you have access to the net if you're in prison, if not then how is he doing it or has someone else set it up on his behalf?

sorry bout the loads of questions btw just curious

Its been closed down once, re opened in false name. Cant tell if its being updated because of the privacy settings. He as been in prison since february, this account is 12 week old.

He is a catorgory A prisoner serving a life sentence, he should not have access to the internet. Its prob by a smuggled mobile phone. It was last time.
Didn't ummm say yesterday that big mammas friend is updating her progress on fbook? In that case a friend with the password can update for him.

Not very nice for the victims or their families but i doubt its illegal so facebook probs wont do anything.

After All the woman from Manchester who met a neighbour on facebook and he killed her and set fire to her .Her facebook page was still up for weeks after her murder.

there's so many members that these things happen and weirdos on the outside of jail would concern me more.

i really don't understand the secrecy bit ???

The press haunted us as a family at the time, pestering for interviews ect. even got in our facebook, kept sending e mails ect
Yes.....Bigmamma's friend had updated her status.....but that's only because BM is poorly and her FB friends are worried about her.

Its a small community where people know everyone so to speak. there have been attacks on my families homes ect since the conviction like smashed windows ect. The criminals family are a particulary nasty family.
Umm shush im using it as an example.

you start drinkin less red bull eh ? grrrrr

well blackie if thats the case posting here will surely add to it.

like i say dont know any details but i doubt its illegal and if hes using a fake name then youd need to be stalking him day and night to find him.if hes got an illegal mobile then hes one of many as its getting more common.

theres really nothing we can do to help in my opinion.if facebook wont do anything then either go to the press or you will need to let it lie i guess.

Leggionaire, its difficult to discuss but there are reasons , wish could go into. I cant give too much imformation here,
if the profile is set to private then it may not even be his account. It may be one of his relatives that set it up and used his photo.

It could be any nutter that set it up, lifting the photo from his earlier fb and using it with a fake name.
The bloke in prison probably knows nothing about it.
Question Author
Redcrx we thought that also but would like to know for sure. He is 17 so maybe it his his friends doing it
open a new account in facebook with another name. complain again to facebook about this person and keep complaining until they remove his profile.
No one will know it was you who did the complaining, although I don't think facebook are very quick at removing someones file, so you have to be persistant.
If need be, threaten them with going to the press about this.
Taken from a BBC web page

A Prison Service spokesperson said: "Prisoners cannot personally contribute to websites and we are determined to tackle illicit mobile phones.

"We are implementing a strategy to minimise the numbers entering prisons, and to find or disrupt the working of those that do get in.

"It is a criminal offence to bring a mobile phone or component into a prison, with a penalty of up to two years imprisonment."

Thanx everyone, I will do as people have suggested.
the only way to know for sure is to be accepted as a friend on the profile.

keep on at the police and facebook.

Im not sure where your family fit into this but did you have any contact at the police station during the investigation? are you able to notify the victims family so that they may report it to a liasing officer?
That's all very well, trout, but there is no evidence that it is the prisoner that is operating the account.
