Volume fluctuates

Can anyone hel? When listening to music via my computer (both online and CD) the volume fluctuates. I have 5:1 surround sound......although 2 of the speakers ONLY work on the sound check and do not work at all in normal use???
I have checked all the connections etc and could do with some help now :)
