Do you mean why do software companies keep releasing newer versions of their products? If so it's for 2 reasons: 1. To provide the customer with an improved product (well, in theory anyway) 2. To keep making lots of money.

There's also the reason that as computers become ever-more sophisticated, software producers will push them to the limit, introducing new features and capabilities that would previously have been too processor intensive.

To fix problems, bugs that got past quality control the first time. Microsoft SP1 and SP2 are examples of this.
