My laptop has just turned its self off and would not restart ,I noticed that the underneath was extremely hot . I let it cool down and am now up and running again but the fan is running constantly even though my cpu usage is only at 5% .Is there any way i can check the core temp and does anybody have any idea what the problem could be I have had the laptop for 2 years without any problems . cheers Joe

Can air get underneath the laptop? If you are using it on a soft surface it will overheat.
Have you cleaned out the fans? A build up of dust can clog the fans and stop them working properly.

Cheers Barry using it on edge of the sofa but its where i always use it and no problems before . Is it easy to clean the fans out as i have never done it.
the sofa is possibly restricting air circulation. Put it on a mag on a flat surface.
I know how to do it for my laptop, it is simply a case of unscrewing a cover on the back and blowing the dust out with compressed air. I have also used a vacuum on a low suction, with care.
This might tell you how to clean yours.

your laptop turned off due to the increase of the temperature of the processor. clean the processor fan. remove some programs from the add and remove programs so that the cpu can not take more memory usage.
increase the ram of the laptop.
