Importing mini dv video into vista via firewire?

Been trying to connect up a sony mini dv camera up to my laptop via firewire with Vista. With the cam plugged in and switched on, moviemaker doesnt see the cam. Any ideas how to do it people? Thanks in advance.

Check the camera instructions - some need to be switched on to playback, some not switched on and some have a special "on" position for talking to computers.
Also check that your Firewire port hasn't been firewalled (Windows has a habit of automatically configuring the port as an IE 1394 network connection)

Hi Rojash, dont have the instructions anymore or lost in the attic somewhere. Ive tried turning it on , and with it off and there isnt any 'on' instruction in the menu system. How do i check the port isnt firewalled? cheers

Start/Settings/Control Panel/Network ***********

Look for 1394 connection
Right-click/Properties
Advanced tab
Windows Firewall

Dont have a 1394 connection listed? Im on vista.

In device manager I have the 1394 device listed and the driver is installed correctly. However, I still get nothing when plugging the cam in. Anyone had a similar problem?
