Does anyone know why the touch pad on laptops do not respond to anything other than a bare human finger touch? I have tried a pen, even my finger with clothing pulled over, but it seems that the skin making contact has to be bare. Is it something along the lines of electrical conductivity from the skin ? Not a problem, just one of those things I wonder about...

they sense the electrical charge created by a human body, also known as Capacitance

thank you, I did wonder if it was that sort of explanation.
Another example is the capacitance-based screen on the iPhone.

Some other screens are resistance-based, so can be used with pointy objects other than your finger.

Some of the newer screens are combining both, so that you get the iPhone-style screen, but some sense of a 'push' button over certain areas of the screen, as you push two thin films together.
