I am in the Hastings area. I have a friend who wants to transfer a valued VHS tape onto disc. Is there anyone in the area reading this who can do it for her?

Almost any photo processing shop should be able to offer this service but it doesn't come cheap.

For example, Jessops (in the Priory Meadow Shopping Centre) will charge 25 for a video of up to 1 hour. (35 for up to 2 hours. 45 for up to 4 hours).

Asda, Tesco and Boots used to offer similar services on their photo-processing counters. (I assume that they all still do). However it might be cheaper to place a small ad on a supermarket's customer noticeboard offering, say, a tenner to anyone who's got a combined VCR/DVD recorder to do the job. (If so, ensure that they can produce a DVD which can be played in your friend's player. DVD recorders use different formats and not all players can handle the disks produced by a particular recorder).

Your friend should note that the commercial services will all refuse to copy VHS tapes which are subject to copyright restrictions. (i.e. they won't transfer Hollywood movies but they will transfer home video recordings).

Thanks again, Chris. I'll pass this on. Fyi, Tray App has failed to reappear so I think we can say with some confidence that this is one problem solved!
