Upside down display on computer monitor

I know how to return the display on a computer monitor back to *normal* when the cat has decided to walk over the keyboard and managed to press Ctrl + Alt + one of the Up/Down/Left/Right buttons.... but my question is WHY did the programmers of Windows XP/2000 put these keystrokes in to have this effect. Why would anyone want to make me sit on my head for half an hour until I could work it all out ?

PS It doesn't seem to work in Vista or is my keyboard just immune to the charms of WeeThug's paws ?

Some monitors can be rotated, which is especially handy on widescreen monitors as if you rotate them round 90degrees then it has about the same format as a a4 sheet of paper.

Thanks Chuck.... I thought that might one of the reasons - landscape to portrait and all the way around. I did wonder why upside down too but it could just form part of that series - 90 deg, 180 deg, 270 deg and 360/0 deg..

Am I right about it not working in Vista though ?
