connecting Wii via wireless router

hello

can anyone help please. i'm having problems connecting my wii to the net. i find the access point etc, entered the key then when the connection tests I get a message saying cannot connect and to look online. i've looked on their help pages but am none the wiser.

they refer to checking MAC filters? have no idea how to do this but connected to the router and can't see anywhere to put the IP address of the Wii so now I'm stuck

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a laptop connected via wireless, not sure if this makes a difference.
