I want to buy a dvd player that I can also record on as well as play the dvd discs I already have. I have been advised to get one with hard drive, but just bought one and not able to play my own dvds, only watch what I've recorded? No slot for normal dvd discs. What should I look for in description when buying online, after returning one just bought!

Sounds as if you bought a PVR rather than a dvd recorder.
I'd go to Currys / Comet / Richer sounds first as you don't know what to ask for.
Once youve seen one you like make a note of the make and model number then go online and see if you can find it cheaper there.
Best makes (reliable ones) are by Sony ,Toshiba and Panasonic but read some reviews on places such as

Dooyoo

or Amazon before parting with cash.
