I managed to get our Dlink DIR615 router working last night but bypassed the security part so I could do it today.Obviously I don't want the whole neighbourhood having access to my internet so can anyone tell me,in very very simple language (step by step literally) what to do.I have looked in the very basic manual and don't see any instructions.I am not too good at this and just don't understand all the jargon.Would be very grateful thanks.

The documentation that came with the router should explain how to set it up.

Look for a section on Security or WiFi Security, and look for terms like WEP or WPA.

WEP is the most basic security, but it is not that good and can be broken easily.

Next best is WPA (or even WPA2) and you should go for that.

Here is the support site for your router and you can download the manuals from there if you have not got them.

You dont say what version of Windows you are running, but if it is Windows XP you must be on Service Pack 2 or later for WPA to work.
Barb ... this is longer than the humber bridge

the book is about as simple as it can be
ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/dir_products/dir-615/DIR-615_Manual.pdf

page 68 on

there is even a wizard which will do it for you ....
if you can't sort it ... get someone in

Thanks to you both. The instructions with the router are the shortest I have ever seen and have nothing about security.I have Vista.Have followed the link you gave and it's really helpful.Have changed the admin password so far but am too bleary eyed to do anything else tonight. Please don't laugh but to reboot the router do I just turn it off and on (told you I was rubbish!) How in the world I got my laptop and router sorted to start with astounded me.Thanks again.
lol vhg ... snap

I'd say at this point keep it simple ... use wep ... wpa is more complicated and may not be compatible with your adapter ...(it also slows the connection while it en/decrypts every packet)

unless you are jemima bond ... (007b?) no one is likely to take the time to break in

Had the same prob ..this was for a new
laptop ..so rung up the help line and the
pc had not be switched to wi -fi ..once it
was on all the security sites click in ..
but if you don't know ..pay a person who
does ...
