it all depends on why you want intenet in your pocket. Do you need to surf or is it just emails you want to download. If it's only emails then a phone is going to be your cheapest option. A smart phone will do both of course. Screen size could be a big issue if you're surfing!

whats the cheapest web access phone? I saw the i-phone and this looks great, It had web sites just as they appear on your PC, maps, youtube, google, etc are they all as good as this?
the iphone can be very quick when its liked up to a wifi signal.

but if out and about then it will use the normal phone signal and it can be slow. But the sites are pretty much as you get on PC (some default to mobile pages for some reason).

The itouch is the same as phone but without the phone part. Its an MP3 with internet, you tube etc
well i'm biased but iphones are rubbish. What they don't tll you is little things like iPhones don't accept picture messages. Not important to me but it is to some. My daughter got one, it's the most dissapointing thing she's ever had. She hates it!

Most new phones will access the web for less outlay than an iPhone and won't restrict you to o2 to which iPhones are locked to by the way.

if you think about it " web sites just as they appear on your PC" means that either

A. the writing will have to be extremely small on your phone ... or big on your 'puter
B. written specially for mobiles
see

http://wap.ebay.co.uk/
C. or The internet fairy will just make it all work ....

I have BT broadband anywhere which is good for e-mail google maps and traffic news and with the sync software I can use it as a modem for my laptop.

"ordinary" websites without a wap alternative are illegible
the BBC, ITV, Radio etc who do have "propper" arrangements won't stream video or audio (or big photos for that matter).

but it's good for e-mail ..... google maps is fair
other than that ..... it's bl@@dy useless.

AB looks like something salvadore dali dreamt about after a particularly bad night

did I mention e-mail - is good

seriously kaz - unless you can read the lable on a fly's reboks - phones just aren't designed for meaningful internet use.

when I'm out and about - I have my lappy with me ... and I use that to share my phone's internet
If I just have the phone ....it's good for e-mail!!!!

until our eyes improve drastically ... or someone develops a fold out screen (mmmmmm!) it's not going to change (that's why eeePCs and the like are so popular).

and then we should talk amout keyboards .....
I know a few people who are very happy with the pocket surfer I linked to.

They knew what its proper purpose was when the bought it - to browse the internet hwilst out and about and nothing else; they find the keyboard relatively comfortable for such a small device.

More about the iPod Touch.

You can get the internet via wifi hotspots. Thousands of pubs bars and Cafes have free or cheap hotspots. I use mine at lot at home instead of the computer.

The internet experience on the touch is the same as the iPhone. You can zoom in and out and text on any website is at a readable size.

You can send and recieve emails. Buy tracks from iTunes, it has Google Earth and you can download from thousands of apps and games.

Argos have the first generation iPod Touch on offer for 129.
