We have only Dial up, cannot have Broadband.
Have Run Virus checks (AVG ans Spybot and Defender) machine declared clean. No Connection problems reported. ISP (Supanet) say that they are sending at normal speed. BT say the line is ok.
SO, why is it that when we first connect everything arrives at normal Dial up spped, but the longer we stay on the slower and slower it gets until every site gets timed out.?
TIA

Are you clearing out your cookies and temp files?
Ethel, isn't it bad to remove cookies and temp files???

Sorry to butt in.

Should have mentioned that I did clear out Cookies, Temp files and History to see if it helped. It didn't.
Also frequently get IE cannot find the page message, even when it has half loaded said page.
Disconnecting and re-connecting starts the process off again by the way.
Lots of people (including myself) have had similar problems. It seems to be related to PCs failing to connect properly with their ISP's domain name server. I've no idea why this happens but I do know that the following always seems to fix it:

First, find out the logical addresses of the primary and secondary domain name servers used by your ISP. (If you're not 'technically minded', don't panic. That just means that you need a couple of sets of numbers, such as 194.72.6.57). The information will be on the support pages of your ISP's website but, if you're with one of the big UK ISPs, you can probably find the information quicker here:
http://www.idl.uk.com/email/isp_settings.htm
or here:
http://www.kitz.co.uk/isp/dns.htm

Now go to your dial-up networking settings and right-click on the icon for your dial-up connection. Select 'Properties'. Then click the 'Networking' tab and the 'TCP/IP Settings' button.

Click to place a dot alongside 'Specify name server addresses'. Fill in the relevant numbers for 'Primary DNS' and 'Secondary DNS'. Click 'OK' twice. Job done and (hopefully) problem fixed.

Chris

(PS: As an alternative to using your ISP's domain name servers, you can use the settings for 'OpenDNS'. They're given at the foot of the second link I've given above. Some people, including myself, find that these give a slight improvement in download times)
funnygirl - no, you should do it regularly

Thank you for trying to help Chris.
Supanet do not appear to have any Support pages so finding out these numbers is not easy. They are not mentioned on the sites you linked.
Also you lost me when you advised going to the Dial-up Networking settings. I have no idea where to find them at all. Sorry I am a very limited PC user.
By the way it has taken since 9 am to ge this far and Supanet home page is jet black and so unreadable!
Thanks again for trying.
You can test the speed of you connection with this site. Sorry but not sure it works with dial up. Prob worth a try tho.

Me again! Sorry Chris. Now have the numbers from Supanet. Still not managed to find where to put them into my machine though! :)
Thanks for the reply, Palustris.

With Windows ME (or earlier):
Go to Start > Settings > Dial-Up Networking.

With Windows XP:
Go to Start > Settings > Network > Network and Dial-Up Connections

With Windows Vista:
Go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections

Then (for all versions of Windows) right-click on the connection icon, select 'Properties' and proceed as above. (You might find that you need to click 'Advanced' to access the TCP/IP settings, in some versions of Windows). Leave all settings unchanged, except the Primary and Secondary DNS addresses.
