Audio out of sync with video

I download various American TV series that aren't available over here or are yet to be screened here. I download using bitcomet and burn onto dvd with Nero and quite often the sound and video are out of sync, sometimes by a second sometimes as much as 5 seconds. Can anyone give any tips as to what is causing this? This even happens if I try to watch the downloaded programme on my PC first.TIA.

Some of them are badly encoded in the first place - nothing you can do about that.
For the DVD version ones - do you have anything else running while Nero is doing it's thing?
Sometimes if you pause for a couple of seconds, then restart it sorts itself out, but not very often
