Is 2GB ram enough?

I am thinking of replacing my ageing laptop and I have been advised that I ought to be thinking of 4GB RAM to cope with modern life.

This is expensive and I wonder whether 2GB is sufficient for a normal home user. I also intend to buy an external hard disk.

Any help would be appreciated and any recommendations on manufacturers and models etc.

Unless you are in to hard core gaming, or high end video editing, 2gb is plenty.

Thank you Ethel-I thought 4GB was a little OTT
LOL..

Our servers at work are running 4gb of ram... so yeah think it's fairly safe to say that 2gb is plenty for most home users :)

I personally like dell laptops, but my company has a policy of using HP and they seem pretty good to.
I think if you have 4GB of RAM, Windows only recognises and reports 3GB when you look it up in System Information.
