I have a new lap top which does not seem to have a fire wire socket, I want to capture movies from my digital sony video camera, can it be done?

I would think you would have a USB port on your new laptop, you should be able to connect them using this.

Firewire works best for this kind of thing.

The laptop probably has an expresscard slot, or cardbus slot (on the side); if so, you can buy a cheap adapter to add a few firewire ports.
