Can anyone tell me will it still be possible to receive digital TV through a portable TV when we all eventually go digital?. I am sure we all have, or have had, a portable tv which we can move from room to room. If not, is this the end of the portable TV.

If it's working now with a freeview set top box, then it will still work after analogue switch-off.

It will be easier to use portable TVs with an indoor aerial after the switch-off, as the digital transmitters will in most cases have their power considerably increased. They are currently running at low power to prevent interference with analogue services.
I have a couple of TV's around the house connected to various freeview boxes and they all work fine with an indoor aeriel but they do really need to be the amplified versions that you can pick up in Argos etc in order to boost the signal a little.
Yes. If you are already getting more than 5 channels and as was said we are promised a stringer signal so it should be better.
stringer ? I mean stronger

Hi again
Further to my earlier question, what I am actually getting as is this. Are there any portableTVs I can buy now or in the future that will have built in freeview enabling me to enjoy digital tv without having to buy a set top box or rely on a outside aerial. If not isn't this a backward step re technology. Sorry for the confusion.

Ah, I see what you're driving at now.

What you seek is available now - here are six 15" models with integral freeview tuners from Comet for example:

Because LCD sets are so light compared to traditional CRT sets, the manufacturers don't appear to classify any particular ones as 'portable'.
I have a portable digital television bought off eBay that runs from car battery cigarette socket or plug in mains transformer. My particular model may be purchased from Maplins who also sell more digital protable televisions including, I think, sets that can house their own batteries (though not entirely sure of that last point).

This is the set we currently use

but only when camping (or if we drive out somewhere) as our house is shielded from all signals by a steep hillside.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to answer. Now I know I can purchase a freeview. TV and have the facility to use it without an outdoor aerial. I will certainly try the Maplins website.
