I have these portable handsets like most people, one in bedroom and one downstairs. However I think the batteries are dying. If they are off their stand for more than a few mins the battery runs down really fast, and the one downstairs barely rings anymore. Even though they have rechargeable batteries in them, which are charged up by the unit, do these get old and need replacing?

Yes, especially if they are NiCads. Some phones use standard sizes, (AA or AAA), but older ones tended to use weird ones, though you should be able to get replacements for them. If they are a standard size, and NiCad, you need to be careful when buying replacements, as most of the rechargeables in the shops nowadays are NiMH. Older base stations and chargers designed for NiCads, are not suitable for recharging NiMHs
