Binatone ansaphone. How does it work?

I have (Sorry! Mrs Daginge has) just bought a Binatone Veva 1210 answerphone (Twinset). There are no instructions re answerphone in user manual. The downloadable PDF version on Binatone.com shows a separate manual, though offered in English it downloads in German. Anyone any ideas? The symbol is flashing like a goodun, possibly indicating a waiting message perhaps? Considering my technophobic resume this is probably a message containing the instructions on how to use the bloody thing! TIA
