DVDs constantly rejected

My DVD player/recorder has occasionally rejected a dvd only to accept it at a later date, but yesterday it started rejecting every DVD I own! It takes a very long time to "read" the disc, then asks to initialize it (when it's been recorded on already - I'm trying to play it!). If I say no, it opens the tray for removal; if I say yes, it initializes and then won't let me do anything with the disc - record, show menu, anything. It repeats the whole procedure again and again. Can anyone help?
