I bought a computer which came with a Gigabyte S-Series GA-MA74GM-S2H motherboard the comuter casing was damaged so the retailer exchanged it. I notice the new motherboard is a Elitegroup P4M900T-M2.
Being a novice can anyone please advise if the exchange is of a similer type and performance as my oridginal or should I insist on the Gigabyte board.

I will be totally honest with you, as a novice it will probably make such incredibly little difference as to what motherboard you have that I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Either the've changed your processor as well or you have your motherboard info wrong.
The Gigabyte is a socket AM2 board which only takes AMD cpu's,whereas the Elitegroup is a socket LGA775,which only takes intel cpu's.
The Elite is only around 27.00 while the Gigabyte is around 43.00,so the Gig is the better board.
Although this should be balanced by the fact that intel cpu's are dearer than their AMD equivolent.
Though obviously they could have put in a cheaper Intel.
Get in touch and ask what cpu you had before and see what one you have now.
Given bongoboy answer disregard what I said, I didn't check the specs and just assumed they would replace a like for like motherboard and all else would be the same.
