Broadband is your only man.
Tom, I have the same problem. Sometimes it can take me ages to even get a connection and then it's disconnected sometimes almost instantly. My computer etc is high-spec and I'm bit of a geek so I know it's all ok at my end. My suspicion is that the Internet has increasingly become popular and the dial-up service is groaning under the weight. I'm a cynic so it wouldn't surprise me if we're being shunted in the way of broadband, in a none too subtle way. Which is a non-starter for me , out here in the sticks!

Thanks honkytonkman, i'm not that good with the pc but I have had friends in to inspect the system and they assure me that all is well. Tiscali is not very helpfull in this matter and said it was the line conection at first, then my pc specs. I tried to cancel the contract with them but they would not agree so now I have a very bad broadband to pay for at least another six months. Somehow I think I have been ripped off. Tom
have you had BT in to check for a noisy line?

Tried everything rja including BT checks but still have the problem....thanks, Tom
Both your original question and the posted answers are somewhat confusing. Are you on brodband or dial-up modem. You gave honkeytonkman 3 stars for his answer which was a conspiracy theory about dial-up connection, then thank him and complain about being stuck with an unreliable broadband connection.Which do you have? If its dial-up it could one of many reasons, if its broadband it could be that you are at the furthest limit for a broadband connection which is generally 5km from your supply exchange measured by the length of the copper telephone wire, not as the crow flies. Some unscrupulous ISPs are supplying connections which do not meet these criteria.

Thanks for the info dodgyshirt and sorry for the confusion. I am on tiscali broadband and less than 5k from the exchange. I am not very good with the pc and at the momemt taking advice from my local shop. They suggested a router to replace the existing sagem modem and hopefully that will cure the problem. Tom
That seems an expensive answer to your problem. I always use an internal PCI modem which are readily available for less than 20. These are generally faster than USB as they use less system resources. Living in Hull, I am tied to its own private telephone system. When they first introduced broadband it was limited to a 3k distance for connection reliability reasons and it is only in the last year that this has been extended to 5k. Being between the two I do find the occasional drop-off in connection speed which leads me to believe that the technology is still not 100%. Best of luck with your problem.
Just had a whole year of the same problem, caught in abattle between AOL & BT. AOL ran me through every angle to sort this, BT told me 6 time the line was ok,AOL said the line was too noisy, in the end i told BT to send an enginear the line inside my house was damaged BT said the line was ok, as it happend the line is tested up to the house, but not inside, BT owe me a year of lost internet subscription to AOL BAS*@% i Will win Hope this solves the problem.
