Can anyone suggest a good quality handheld GPS for use in the UK, USA and Portugal. I don't really want to spend over 200 and do not need mapping just lat/long/elev and compass with plenty of waypoint memory.

Also are there any position refinement systems that work in the UK that are online now like WAAS in the states and EGNOS for Europe and are they worth it for the better resolution

Any of the Magellan GPS systems are good. Im not sure about working in Portugal and USA, but give them a ring when you find one you like. Go to google and type Magellan GPS. There are plenty of links. Most of the handheld ones are less than 200.
I agree with Stav. I have a Magellan Meridian GPS and have been impressed with it. Garmin GPS also get good write ups. I used my Magellan in the USA with WAAS last year and the accuracy was excellent. Having said that I have also used it in the UK without the benefit of WAAS/EGNOS and the accuracy was still very good. If you don't need a mapping ability then you shouldn't have to spend too much over 100. I've attached an interesting link regarding EGNOS www.pocketgps.co.uk/egnos.php
