Last weekend I needed to open a word document sent to me and the only copy of MS office I could find at the time was Office 97 which served it purpose but I have spent days trying to delete it and thought I had eventually succeeded but the task bar just won't go away and every I time I try to delete it it just locks up and trues to reinstall. I am using Vista ultimate 32bit Please can someone rescue me from this - thanks

What exactly do you mean by "trying to delete it"?
You should uninstall it by going to Programs and Features in the control panel.
Like Rojash, I'm a little confused as to exactly what it is you're trying to do. The taskbar should only be present if the program is actually running and you can't uninstall a program which is in use. To uninstall Office 97 you should close the program completely first. (If simply clicking the 'close' button doesn't work, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and close the program from the Task Manager). Then uninstall via 'Programs & Features'.

If that doesn't work, run System Restore to set your computer's registry back to a date before last weekend.

You dont need to install Office to read a Word file.

Microsoft provide a Word Viewer which is a small file downloadable for free. You can view word files with this.

Answerbank has censored my web site address.

Anyway you can get it from here

hiya again .... we had this question last week

http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Technology/Comp uters/Question538420.html

basically ... download the remover
http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/HA01136 2891033.aspx

if that won't work ....
try installing the whole office package (default options) and then uninstall .... again

the office "installer" is very picky what it will (and won't) remove

Well thank you very much all for your replies - none of which have been received by email!! After I put the question on site yesterday it was a bit hectic here and I have only just found time to check back and had not received any notices thought unanswered.
I did all the right things as suggested above ie via add/remove programmes, was requested to open programe disc etc etc but the task bar ( my main irritation) was still there. I had to repeat and eventually I thought got rid of the individual programmes but the task bar is still there and MS office is no longer in programme list ACtheTROLL I have followed link for remover but only seems to mention XP so have not downloaded as yet. Maybe the best suggestion is the system restore but as I downloaded Open Office which I prefer I imagine I would lose this too? Normally I can download the occasional word file by sending to my husband's PC but he has different problems we are trying to sort and his printer was temporarily disconnected If I have clarified a bit update suggestion welcome thanks
the removal tool should still work ....
the big problem is that 97 isn't on the vista compatible guestlist ....

have you tried the complete install/uninstall?
if the cd is available that's always the first thing to try.

if you have a later version of office (any version from 2003> should work also ... full install then uninstall - it certainly works when you don't want it to.

system restore will only partially work as it only restores the system files (sort of speaks for itself)
it will leave anything else

Many thanks ACtheTROLL
I did have an Office 2000 disc but it is missing from its box hence using the older one. I do have the disc and will have to try the install/uninstall route I suppose but today it is a glorious springlike day and I am taking the opportunity to catch up in the garden so will have to leave till later on. I will let you know if I succeed

By the way I am still not getting emails from AB notifying me when anyone replies and I have given up using the site on Sundays because it is so so slow
