i have an aol account but when i moved house and bought my laptop and tried to put my screen name in it came up saying the screen name was already taken, and that i will have to sign in as a guest, well i know this cos i took the screen name yrs ago and have never had a problem using it on other computers . its a pain having to log in as a guest because i will not let me save anything in favourites, i lose everything including history when i log off.
i am the administrator of the lap top but with a screen name supplied by aol when i opened my new account at my new address.

sounds as if you are trying to create a new user ....
just sign in as yourself ...using your own ID/Password

i cant it only gives me the guest option , if i try creating my screen name it says it is already taken.

but don't you sign in to aol using your own ID and PW to accree an account that includes your screen nsme?

(got to admit I don't use AOL ... but the systems I do use ... link ID to profile)

nope you just open aol and i gives you a list of screen names that are linked to the computer, you click on the screen name you wish to use then sign in as i said i have to use guest or the administrators addy assigned to me by aol

Right - on the site it says

1 Create an AOL screen name (this will be your AIM log in)
If you already have a screen name then skip straight to step 2
2 Download the latest version of AIM
3 Start chatting to your friends online in real time

To sign on:
1. On the AIM Express sign-on screen, enter your screen name in the Screen Name field.
2. Enter your password in the Password field.
3. Click Sign On.

as I read it .... if you already have a screen name (which by the sound of it you do)

all you need to do is sign in using your details

that works with a new account but i have an old account i dont have the options you describe all i have is a list of names and a guest tab and if i go as administrator to add new screen name it tells me that screen name is in use im already on aim in my screen name but the prob is getting it recognised on this puter, i have no probs on other puters eg work

just tried yr suggestion i upgraded from aim 5.5 to aim 6.1. got the aim icon on my desk top logged on using my screen name but then my screen name highlights and a message tells me there is a sever error story of my life here i reckon lol
