Someone told me that the pebbles on brighton beach were put there by the victorians to stop erosion. Is this true. It seems like a massive task to me if so....?

Not really..there were a lot of Victorians, they didn't all live in England..ok?? If that was at Brighton, what about all the other destitute Pommey beaches?...they must have been busy!!..and whence came all the pebbles?.. Cheers
