I have about 6/7 4 hour Hi8 tapes that i want transferred onto my laptop...

The easiest option would be to buy a secondhand Digital 8 camera. Most of these will play both DV and Hi 8 tapes (check the spec!). Then you can use the DV out socket to connect to a PCMCIA firewire port on your laptop.

Alternatively you could get a Dazzle converter kit This will take the AV out from your camera, convert it to digital, and send it to your laptop via USB.
