For some reason and i am not aware of doing anything to make it happen, half the documents i have saved in My Documents and the various other folders in Office have had the titles turn blue - ie when i go to open files and the list of docs come up half of them are named in blue text and half still in black - anybody know what this means?

I think it indicates compression. The blue files have been compressed to save space on you drive. Not sure about this, anyone know for sure.
Blue means that the file is compressed. If they are large, WIndows XP will compress them automatically to save on disk space.
