Should a Belkin USB wif adapter (dongle) talk to a D Link router if they're both wireless G or are they specific to their own devices. I have a belkin dongle and a d link router but can't get them to communicate!

Your dongle should be able to 'talk' to any router - after all, you may want to connect away from home.

Have you installed the software for the dongle?

Is it the Wireless G US Adapter F5D7050?

Are you using Windows XP?
Depends on so many things....
when g was first defined the mfrs all went ahead and produced their own versions (n is in the same position now) - so that they could be first on the shelves

wep psk etc were already defined ... but the "n" implementations weren't. So while compatibility should be there - often only the unsecured connection is fully compatible ... soon a you try to do anything "fancy" like even basic levels of encryption ... the whole thing turns into a nightmare.

in some cases even different versions (b, g, n etc) won't talk - even though they are made by the same company.

Wire is (almost) foolproof - homeplug is pretty good (until it saturates - then it will be almost as bad as wifi.
