How would i find out what country a phone number comes from.

You tell by the international code. There is a full list here:
http://www.kropla.com/dialcode.htm

Its at the start of the number.

NO, mobile phone numbers don't use country codes.

Only landlines use country codes.

What i meant was, our numbers on mobiles generally start 07... do other countries have that with different numbers

yeah my wee bro is in germany and has a german mobile number, its cheaper that way, Im going away next month to NEw Zealand and will buy a local sim to use whilst away, seems like a brill idea to me

Dunno where you get that idea from; if you wanted to call me on my mobile in Greece, you would need to use the +30 prefix exactly as you would for my landline, and conversely, if I was going to dial your UK mobile, I would need to use the +44 prefix.
