Get a disc from the disc drive. Tried the button on the side, nowt happens, do I have to go to the media player and do something fandangled?

There should be a little pin hole in the drive facia that will open the drive if you push in something long and pointy.
Double click on "My Computer" on your Windows desktop. The "My Computer" window opens.

Find the icon for your CD drive, and RIGHT click on the icon.

From the menu that is displayed choose Eject.

many thanks. They don't work though...seems to think the disc is playing and wont' let me get it out mid play??
If it's jammed - happens - follow khana's advice. it's very safe and that's what it's designed for. Use a paperclip or somesuch and just poke through that little pinhole. I know it sounds wrong but it starts the tray mechanically.
