digital music quality

i own 400 cds plus, and would like to transfer to digital, and then play through good hifi ie Linn amp and speakers. A good used cd player - Linn Ikemi to suit my Linn system, will cost �800.00. can i get near this quality without this purchase?

What do you mean by "would like to transfer to digital". CDs are already digital.

Do you mean perhaps you own 400 LPs ?

Note that if you tansfer any music (CD or LP) to mp3 format the music is compressed and you do suffer from loss of quality.

This does not matter to most people as they are listening on an MP3 player, but you may notice this on a top quality hi fi system.

i meant to say, transfer to itunes or windows media player for example. i have heard different opinions that is you dont compress the music, the quality can be good.
Thought there may be specialist equipment for this purpose.

FLAC is a music file format that does not lose any detail, unlike mp3 and most other formats. You can convert your CDs to FLAC and then play them though windows media player (but not itunes).
