Copying phonebook contact to computer?!

Can anyone tell me the step-by-step instructions on how to copy my very full phonebook to the computer, then onto my new phone?
I have tried to connect to my pc via usb cable but have been unable to find the phonebook option listing in my computer. Any ideas where I am going very wrong - my phones are motorola.
