I have discovered that I can download my favourite programme via iTunes.

Do I just download this and play it on my computer? Do I need special software? Do I have to buy an ipod?
As I am a complete idiot when it comes to new stuff please give me all the relevant pros and cons.
Will downloading this kill my Media Player?
